French Style Tub Chair

An antique reading chair shown fully gilded in gold leaf. This beautiful French tub chair has hand carve swan wing arms and sabre legs with acanthus leaf carving to the knees. Such a stunning and comfortable reading chair that was often found in stately private Chateau libraries throughout France.

Often, this French style tub chair would have been upholstered in decorative lighter coloured fabrics that were popular at the beginning of the Empire period c1800. Darker fabrics, such as this watermarked pure silk fabric gradually gained momentum for French Empire furniture later in the period, as fashion became more formal.
